Tucked away in the scenic town of Reigate, Surrey, this unique garden transformation turned a steep, disused quarry into a breathtaking multi-level outdoor sanctuary. We were tasked with reimagining the space into something both practical and stunning — combining railway sleepers, natural sandstone paving, and strategic elevation changes to create a garden that’s as functional as it is beautiful.
Client Challenge: Natural Landscape Integration with Level Changes
The client approached us with a garden space carved into the side of an old quarry. The steep incline made it difficult to use, and poor access had left it overgrown and underutilised. They wanted a space that preserved the quarry’s natural beauty while making it accessible, family-friendly, and low maintenance.
The Solution
We began with careful excavation and planning to preserve the integrity of the existing stone faces and structure. From there, we introduced a tiered design using railway sleepers to form robust, rustic steps and retaining walls — ideal for controlling the gradient while blending with the natural surroundings.
Design Style & Materials
This design blends natural elements with structured hard landscaping. The warm tones of the sandstone patios contrast beautifully with the earthy railway sleepers, while gravel beds and planted zones break up the space visually and soften the transitions.
