Garden Sleepers Quarry Garden Makeover in Reigate, Surrey
Featuring Railway Sleepers, Indian Sandstone Slabs, Steps & Natural Stone Landscaping
Project Brief
The client approached us looking to redesign their rear garden in Redhill to create a more functional and visually appealing outdoor space. Their goals were to:
- Replace a tired and uneven patio with something elegant and low-maintenance
- Introduce raised planting areas for herbs and shrubs
- Improve the flow between different levels of the garden
- Add stylish fencing that increases privacy without feeling too enclosed
The client favoured natural materials and wanted the final space to blend a modern rustic aesthetic with a clean and usable layout.
Client Challenge: Natural Landscape Integration with Level Changes
Every project comes with its own unique set of challenges. Here’s what we encountered in this one:
- Level Differences – The garden had uneven ground levels that required excavation and precise step placement to ensure safe and fluid movement throughout.
- Drainage Concerns – As with many natural stone installations, ensuring proper water runoff without pooling required the implementation of a subtle but effective gradient.
- Tight Access – The access route to the rear garden was narrow, which limited machinery and delivery options, requiring careful scheduling and material handling.
- Bespoke Sizing of Oak Sleepers – The client wanted exact dimensions for the planters to align with the patio layout, which involved custom-cutting and securely fixing the oak sleepers on site.
The Solution
We began with ground prep and leveling, followed by laying the natural stone patio with attention to spacing and drainage. Matching stone steps were added to provide a safe, practical transition between levels.
We built bespoke raised oak sleeper planters tailored to the layout, adding a warm and rustic character while also being highly functional. Finally, batten-style fencing was erected to frame the space and provide a clean, modern finish that also maintains privacy.
Design Style & Materials
This design blends natural elements with structured hard landscaping. The warm tones of the sandstone patios contrast beautifully with the earthy railway sleepers, while gravel beds and planted zones break up the space visually and soften the transitions.
Materials Used:
- Natural Stone (for patio and steps)
- Oak Railway Sleepers (for raised planters)
- Batten Timber Fencing (for a contemporary finish)
Final Result
The outcome is a balanced, sophisticated garden that blends textures and natural materials. The space is now ideal for relaxing, entertaining, and gardening—offering both form and function in every square metre.
