Project Overview
Gardens Design and Build Ltd completed a full rear garden transformation for Joanna and Tom in Redhill, creating a spacious sandstone patio with a striking curved step system leading from the house down to the garden. Finished with an integrated gulley surround for effective drainage, the space is as functional as it is visually impressive.
Client Brief
The client wanted to replace their existing rear outdoor space with a natural stone patio that would create a smooth, attractive transition from the house to the garden. Key requirements included a durable sandstone surface with rich natural tones, a well-proportioned curved step system to manage the change in level from the back door, and reliable drainage to keep the patio free from standing water, all finished to a high standard throughout.
Our Solution
We began by clearing and preparing the site, levelling the ground to create a solid, stable base for the new patio. Multi-toned sandstone paving was laid across the full patio area, chosen for its warm, natural colour variation and durability outdoors. A curved, multi-tiered step system was built to connect the raised back door level down to the patio, designed with soft rounded edges for a modern, elegant finish. A gulley surround was integrated along the edge of the patio to manage surface water effectively, keeping the drainage discreet and the paving free of pooling. Gravel borders were added along the boundary fencing to soften the hard landscaping and provide a clean finish against the perimeter.

Challenges Overcome
- Building a curved step system required precise setting-out and skilled cutting of the sandstone to achieve smooth, rounded edges while maintaining structural stability. Integrating the gulley surround along the patio edge demanded careful levelling to ensure water drains effectively without disrupting the visual flow of the stonework. Managing the level change between the house and garden also required careful planning to keep the steps safe, proportionate, and in keeping with the overall design.
Result
The finished patio gives Joanna and Tom a stunning, functional outdoor space that flows naturally from their home into the garden. The curved step system adds a distinctive, high-end feel, while the sandstone paving and discreet gulley surround combine natural beauty with lasting practicality.
