Project Brief
This garden in Redhill was in need of a practical yet visually appealing outdoor space. The client wanted a low-maintenance garden that combined functionality with natural, earthy elements. Our design focused on creating a seamless flow from the indoor space to the outdoors using a tiered patio with carefully crafted steps, framed with oak planters for added warmth and texture. To complete the look, we installed a clean-lined batten fence for privacy and railway sleeper planters to introduce depth and planting variety.
Client Challenge
One of the primary challenges we encountered during this project was the garden’s natural slope. To create a safe and visually appealing space, we had to carefully level the ground and design custom steps that allowed for smooth and secure movement between the different levels. In addition, drainage was a key consideration — we integrated an effective system beneath the patio to prevent water accumulation during heavy rain, ensuring the longevity and usability of the space. Another layer of complexity came with material coordination; blending the rich tones of natural stone with the warmth of oak and the rustic character of railway sleepers required thoughtful sourcing and meticulous installation to achieve a harmonious and cohesive finish.
The Solution
To address the garden’s sloping terrain, we implemented a tiered layout and constructed carefully measured stone steps that not only enhanced accessibility but also added visual interest. This approach allowed for a seamless transition between levels while maintaining safety and structural integrity. For drainage, we installed a discreet yet highly effective system beneath the patio surface, ensuring that water runoff is managed efficiently and preventing any risk of pooling, even during heavy rains. In terms of material coordination, we hand-selected natural stone slabs, oak planters, and railway sleepers with complementary tones and textures.
