Garden Planting Scheme and Reclaimed Railway Sleepers

Featuring Indian Sandstone Path, Reclaimed Sleepers and Plants Selection.

Project Brief

This Dorking garden was in need of structure, plants, and personality. The client wanted to refresh their outdoor space with a clear walking path and a thoughtfully curated planting scheme that would bring year-round interest without overwhelming maintenance. Our goal was to create flow and softness, guiding visitors through the garden while enhancing its natural beauty. We recommended a natural stone pathway, meandering gently through layered plant beds filled with a mix of perennials, shrubs, and seasonal colour.

Client Challenge

One of the main challenges was the lack of definition in the existing garden layout — the space felt flat, open, and underwhelming. There was no visual journey or structure, and planting beds had poor soil quality. Additionally, the client wanted the new garden to look lush but still be easy to manage, requiring thoughtful plant selection and spacing. Finally, drainage needed to be considered to ensure the pathway remained functional during wet conditions.

The Solution

To tackle the undefined layout, we designed a gently curving stone path that naturally guided movement and visually anchored the space. We restructured the planting beds by improving the soil composition and adding mulch for water retention and weed control. Our planting scheme was tailored to suit a low-maintenance lifestyle — using hardy perennials, evergreens, and drought-tolerant varieties that offer year-round interest without constant upkeep. A subtle slope and gravel base under the path ensured proper drainage, preventing waterlogging and keeping the walkway safe and durable through the seasons.

Design Style & Materials

The project follows a Soft Contemporary Garden style — clean enough to feel modern, but with an emphasis on organic movement and lush, layered planting. The natural stone path breaks the formality, adding charm and guiding foot traffic naturally through the space. Plant selections were made for texture, seasonal variation, and colour harmony, creating an immersive yet easy-to-manage garden space.

Materials Used:

  • Natural Stone Paving: Chosen for its durability and rustic elegance, used to create a gentle, winding garden path.
  • Premium Topsoil and Mulch: Prepared beds with nutrient-rich soil and organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Perennials, Shrubs & Grasses: Including lavender, salvia, euphorbia, ornamental grasses, and evergreen structure plants.
  • Edging Stones: Neatly frame the path and borders for a polished finish and clear separation of spaces.

Final Result

The finished garden is a peaceful and thoughtfully composed space that blends beauty with functionality. The natural stone path invites you in and creates a gentle rhythm throughout the garden. On either side, curated planting beds bring movement, colour, and texture to the space — from soft blooms to architectural foliage. The garden now feels structured yet alive, offering changing interest throughout the seasons with minimal effort. It’s a transformation that delivers both elegance and ease, tailored perfectly to the client’s needs and lifestyle.
