Project Brief
The homeowners in Horley wanted to transform their plain and underused garden area into a functional and visually appealing space. Their vision was to have a durable patio that could comfortably accommodate outdoor seating, dining, and occasional entertaining. They specifically requested a natural stone finish that would blend with the garden’s existing greenery while also adding a touch of elegance. After reviewing several options, Indian sandstone was selected for its natural colour variation, classic appeal, and resilience to the UK’s changing weather. Our goal was to create a space that looked beautiful year-round and would stand the test of time with minimal maintenance.
Client Challenge
One challenge we encountered during this project was the uneven ground in the client’s garden, which required careful preparation and levelling to achieve a smooth, stable base. Additionally, ensuring proper drainage was critical — we needed to design a subtle gradient to direct water away from the home while maintaining a flat, usable surface. Another important consideration was colour consistency, as Indian sandstone is a natural material with varying hues. Careful slab selection was key to creating a visually harmonious layout.
The Solution
To resolve the ground-level issue, we excavated and compacted a stable sub-base, followed by a full mortar bed to provide support and prevent future settling. We also built in a gentle slope to aid drainage, directing runoff safely toward the garden without compromising usability. During installation, we handpicked and dry-laid the slabs before fixing to ensure a balanced mix of colours and a cohesive overall appearance. The result is a patio that’s not only practical and durable but also visually stunning.
Design Style & Materials
The design embraced a Timeless Rustic Elegance style, where rich natural tones and textures take centre stage. The varied colours of the Indian sandstone — from soft beiges to golden browns — created a warm, inviting surface that complemented the surrounding garden beautifully. Straight cuts and clean joints gave the patio a refined finish, while the organic stone textures added rustic character.

- Indian Sandstone Paving Slabs: Calibrated for consistency, chosen for their natural variation and durability.
- Grout & Jointing Compound: Used for seamless finishes and weatherproofing.
- Compacted Sub-base & Mortar Bed: Ensured stability, longevity, and resistance to shifting over time.
- Edging Stones (optional): Installed where necessary to create clear borders and define the patio area.

The finished patio is a beautiful, durable outdoor space that has completely revitalised the garden. The Indian sandstone brings character and elegance, while the craftsmanship ensures the surface is smooth, even, and long-lasting.
